John Singer who, after a shipwreck on Padre Island, found a fortune in Spanish coins and jewelry with his family. They reportedly buried this treasure, along with salvaged materials, in a sand dune they called “Money Hill”. The Singers were Union sympathizers and had to relocate during the Civil War, losing track of their buried wealth. Despite attempts to find it, the treasure remains lost and is still a topic of local lore and searching.
